Bam! The sound startled Harmon awake. He groaned this happened every single morning. Just once he'd like to sleep past six thirty on a week day but if he stayed at this apartment it seamed he never would. Harmon tried to get back to sleep but as usual he couldn't get back to that nice warm place he always dreamed of. He groaned once again and got up to start his day.
But somehow today was a little off. Harmon couldn't put his finger on it as he went through his morning routine but everything was just odd. He looked around his house for a visible change and didn't find anything. Then looked at the clock it wasn't six thirty like he thought it was it was four twenty seven. Harmon hadn't even noticed because it was dark at this time of year when he got up. He stared blankly at the clock for a bit before he heard it.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
The loud noise rocked Harmon's body. Then he sprang into action. He grabbed his cordless phone and got down on the ground. The sound of what could only be gunfire pumping adrenalin into his system. Harmon dialed nine one one quickly and was greeted by a nice sounding woman.
"Hello nine one one what is your emergency?"
"I just heard someone fire a gun." Harmon said his brain fumbling for concise words.
"Are you hurt?"
"No. But someone else could be." He said realizing it as he said it.
"Where are you at?"
"I'm at my apartment in moss apartments off of 10th street."
"I'm going to send someone down there but I need you to stay on the line sir."
Harmon tried to stay calm but found it hard when someone could still be there or someone could be hurt. He got up from his place on the floor and walked over to his door. He listened for a minute before twisting the nob and steping out into the hall.
Harmon couldn't see anything out of the ordinary but then the unmistakeable smell of blood hit his nose. He droped the phone and vaguly heard the woman asking if he was alright. Slowly he went towards it. When he got there he saw the woman from an apartmen. Down the hall. She had a glasy eyes and had blood running from under her. Harmon tried to find a pulse but after a few minutes gave up. She was gone.
Then he realized something horrible she had a little boy. He bolted down the hall looking for him. Harmon wished he rembered his name so he could call it out. He got to an apartment with an open door and called out.
"Anyone in here?"
He looked around for a moment before he heard some sniffling and shuffling coming from the front closet. He made his way over and hesitated before opening the door.
The little boy was curled in the cornor. Harmon got down onto his knees and said "Hey there. I'm not going to hurt you. Okay?"
The little boy didn't say anything but looked over at him with tear stained cheeks.
"The police are going to be here really soon alright?"
The boy nodded in understanding.
"Do you want to come on out of there so we can meet them?" Harmon asked keeping his voice calm so as not to scare him.
The boy nodded again and held out his arms. Harmon took hold of him and stood. The boy rested his head against his sholder.
"Hey buddy can you do something for me? When we get into the hall I want you to shut your eyes real tight. Okay?" The boy nodded and Harmon walked out of the room.
"Are your eyes closed?"
Harmon felt him nod and felt safe to walk down the hall to the stairs. He walked down them carrying him and saw in the lobby that the police were finally there. He put the boy down and said,
"You did really really good alright? See the police are here and they'll take you to your family okay?"
The boy nodded. "So I'll see Mommy?"
